Our Story

Founded in 1836, NewTown is one of Montgomery’s oldest African American communities, established during a time of profound social and economic challenges. As a neighborhood built by freedmen and formerly enslaved individuals, NewTown became a symbol of resilience and determination. Over the decades, it grew into a vibrant community, rich with culture, history, and stories of triumph. Despite facing systemic inequalities and the legacy of segregation, NewTown’s residents have continually worked to preserve its identity and heritage. Today, NewTown stands as a testament to the strength of its people and their enduring commitment to building a better future while honoring the past.

Mission

NewTown represents a legacy of resilience, strength, and cultural heritage rooted in the journey of African American communities. Our mission is to preserve this rich history, honor the stories of those who built this neighborhood, and create a thriving, unified community. By fostering education, opportunity, and pride, we aim to empower current and future generations to carry forward NewTown’s legacy as a beacon of cultural significance and progress.

Giving Back

In NewTown, we believe in the power of community and the importance of giving back. Our efforts focus on preserving the neighborhood’s history, supporting local initiatives, and uplifting residents through education, resources, and opportunities for growth. By working together, we honor NewTown’s legacy and ensure a brighter future for generations to come.
